Job Title: Linguist II 25410-1Duration: 12 monthsJob Type: W2Job Location: Menlo Park, CAJob Description: The overall function of the linguist in this position will be to use their linguistic expertise and experience to guide and support the development of machine-learning-powered translation models. The main areas of expertise to be provided include sociolinguistics, dialectology, language typology, language universals, and morphology, but the candidate should also have some familiarity with other aspects of linguistics, such as corpus linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, syntax, and phonology.More specifically, typical responsibilities may include (but aren’t limited to):? Providing expertise in linguistic typology and sociolinguistics, or collecting and summarizing typological and sociolinguistic information for multiple languages? Providing other linguistic expertise, as needed, for example in the areas of morphology or syntax? Assessing the quality of linguistic data in multiple languages? Reaching out to, and collaborating with, native speakers to gather or verify linguistic information? Providing linguistic analyses of machine translations and identifying potential error patternsTop 3 must-have HARD skills:1. Proficiency in sociolinguistics and language typology (experience working with low-resource languages is a plus), solid grasp of morphology, syntax, and semantics2. Experience in the teaching or assessment of translation practices3. Ability to write short Python scripts and SQL queriesGood to have skills:1. Knowledge of machine translation and machine learning principles2. Background or specialization in corpus linguistics or language data curation3. Knowledge or experience in anthropological linguistics field work4. Knowledge of industry standards in language codification and character encoding principlesEducation/Experience:• Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, language technologies, computational linguistics, speech science, or related field.
